Choose your language and dictionary
Word Release offers five dictionaries. Choose the one you want to use before starting a new game.
The five choices
- British English — the British English word list.
- American English — the American English word list.
- German — play German words using the shared A–Z tiles.
- Spanish — play Spanish words using the shared A–Z tiles.
- French — play French words using the shared A–Z tiles.
How to select your dictionary
- Open the game selection screen.
- Press Language in the top bar, then use Choose Language.
- Select one of the five dictionary buttons and confirm your choice. Use Check a Word to search its word list.
- Return to the game selection screen and start an online game, a bot game or a practice game.
Your choice applies to new games. Existing games keep their original dictionaries, so changing your preference does not change a game already in progress. A flag beside each player’s name shows their dictionary.
Accents and special letters
All languages use the same A–Z tiles and letter scores. German uses AE for Ä, OE for Ö, UE for Ü and SS for ß. Spanish uses plain vowels for Á, É, Í, Ó and Ú, U for Ü and N for Ñ. French uses unaccented letters, including E for É and C for Ç; Œ becomes OE and Æ becomes AE.
The game’s word list decides whether a word is accepted. Check a spelling in the in-game dictionary if you are unsure.
Your opponent can choose differently
You do not need to use the same dictionary as your opponent. Read Play cross-language to learn how different languages work on one board.
