Bonus Words

Each game has a bonus phrase. If both players use the same language, they share one phrase. British and American English count as the same language. Players using different languages each have a different bonus phrase in their own language.

Bonus points and letter swaps

When you play a word from your bonus phrase, you earn an additional 10 points per letter in the bonus word and one letter swap per letter in that bonus word, alongside your normal word score.

For example, playing THE earns 30 bonus points and 3 letter swaps. Playing THEM also earns that reward if THE is an available bonus word: only the three letters in THE count towards this bonus.

A bonus word can be claimed only once in the game; with a shared phrase, either player can claim it first. Press the B button on the board to see your bonus words and which have been played.

How letter swaps work

Earned swaps accumulate for you in the current game. On your turn, the Swap button appears when you have swaps available and shows your remaining balance.

1. Press Swap to open Swap Letters.
2. Select the rack letters you want to replace, up to your available balance.
3. Press Swap selected letters.

Each replaced letter uses one swap and is replaced with a randomly drawn letter. Swapping costs no credits and does not use your turn, so you can then play your word. You may use your remaining swaps again during the game. Unused swaps do not carry over to another game.

Swap differs from Exchange: Exchange uses your turn. Swapping also clears any revealed hint for the old rack; hints for the changed rack can be purchased again.
